Chapter 16

Careless What You Wish For

In her Stranmillis apartment, Daisy was becoming tired of playing referee between her two friends. Even a bottle of Australian red wine between them had miserably failed to oil their crevices and they were still bickering. In fact, to say Lorna and Eddie had failed to hit it off was putting it mildly. If they continued like this, Daisy was sure they’d eventually hit each other; such were their very different opinions on everything from celebrities to cellulite.

“Look, you two. How about a change of subject? I’m sure there are much more important things to talk about than my love life. It’s really not that important,” said Daisy as she poured the dregs of wine into Lorna’s glass. With any luck it would send her to sleep.

“I’m sorry,” said Lorna in a high-pitched squeal, “but I don’t understand how you could be actually contemplating renewing relations with a man who is about to be married. I mean, you have barely mentioned the name Jonathan Eastwood to me in all the years I’ve known you. I just don’t get it.”

Daisy could tell Eddie’s blood was reaching boiling point at Lorna’s forceful opinions.

“I’m sure there are a lot of things Daisy hasn’t told you,” he hissed.

Daisy felt like standing between the two and doing a striptease or something equally gross, just to stop them referring to her in the third person.

“I’m not questioning that, but believe me, Mister, Daisy and I have had some very frank conversations around this kitchen table. And your brother has probably only ever received a maximum of twenty seconds’ airtime. Now that hardly makes him the love of her life.”

Daisy tried her best to intervene again but there was no stopping them now. She felt like a ping-pong ball, bouncing from one end of the table to the other.

“Did you ever stop to think that maybe there’s a reason behind why Daisy hasn’t spoken about Jonathan till now?”

“Hello! I am still here, you know,” shouted Daisy. “Do I have any say in this conversation at all?”

“No,” they said loudly in unison.

“Is there some other issue with Jonathan? Would someone please let me into the big secret?” asked Lorna, waving a cigarette in the air dramatically.

“I think Eddie is referring to the car accident in which our dads were killed, Lorna,” said Daisy quietly.

“But I thought you said it was nobody’s fault. Isn’t that what the word ‘accident’ means?” said Lorna.

Tea, thought Daisy. Then she realised she really was morphing into Killshannon housewife mode again by thinking that a cup of tea could settle any row. There was way too much tension in the air for her liking.

“I’m going to get more wine,” said Eddie, who was in no mood for tea. “I think we’ll just agree to differ on this one, Lorna. I’m sure you know Daisy just as well as I do … ”

“Better…”

“Oh, would you two please…”

Eddie stormed out through the front door of the girls’ apartment and Daisy rushed to the window.
